History of the museum
The museum first opened its doors to visitors in September 2007 , so its age as a museum is more than just – Compared to most museums in our city, we can talk about the existence of this institution as a real "museum childhood". And to children, as we are accustomed, and our attitude is usually special – from whom, if not from them, do we expect brawls or antics? In fact, the only creation of a museum dedicated to such a « delicate » topic, can already be perceived as a kind of prank. However, it should be noted that museums dedicated to the toilet, in fact, have long existed in the UK, India, Singapore, South Korea, USA, Germany, Austria, Japan, and even Russia, as this topic leaves much room for historical research. and culture, art and design, medicine and hygiene, as well as the history of technology and even & ndash; high technology! And everyone who visits the museum will be convinced of this.
The exposition of the Museum of Toilet History is presented by two groups of exhibits:
- The first includes the largest collection of souvenir toilets, pots and toilets in our country, which is not only listed in the & quot; National Register of Records of Ukraine & quot ;, but also has a Guinness Book of World Records certificate as & quot; the world's largest collection of souvenir toilets. li>
- The second group consists of original & rsquo; objects, replicas, models, paintings, works of art and informative materials illustrating the main stages of development of human culture & ndash; from ancient times to the present.
During the tour of the museum, the visitor learns a lot of historical details, which are often due to & laquo; delicacy & raquo; topics were released during school history lessons. In fact, do many of us know how our distant ancestors met their natural needs? What did the toilets in the settlements of primitive man look like and arranged? When did she, a man, first build a toilet? And is it not from the moment of realizing the need to create this object that we can talk for the first time about the emergence of Man as such? Unfortunately, even for historians and archaeologists, this topic is still covered with white spots. However, we still know something – and we are pleased to tell the museum guests how wildly popular the first public toilets were in ancient Rome, why medieval toilets were called " wardrobes " ;, or why during the Renaissance, ordinary potty trips became real “throne meetings”.».
History has preserved many interesting facts, customs and even some spicy details related to the topic of toilet culture. But above all – history gives us lessons that we can learn to move forward, to build a truly highly developed society . And vice versa – If you ignore these lessons, you may end up in a place where it will smell bad – literally. History shows an example of the cyclical nature of human development: the destruction of civilizations, the decline of the general cultural level in a society inevitably affects the development of a culture of hygiene. A vivid illustration is the example of modern India, where even a child knows about the problems of sanitation. However, not everyone guesses that the civilization of the Indus Valley for two and a half thousand years BC. gave humanity and toilets, and perhaps the first sewer system in human history. Unfortunately, this example is not the only one, so the founders of the museum constantly emphasize that the everyday culture of mankind is the basis without which the development of civilization is simply impossible. Awareness of this truth is more important than ever for our society today. After listening to the tour, museum guests will learn how to solve the problem of access to the toilet today in the air, in water or space, will be able to see the Japanese & quot; toilet miracle " technology that will do for your visitor well « everything » necessary, including not only bidets and hair dryers, but also laboratory tests, and will hear disappointing facts: even in the XXI century, humanity has not yet learned to be grateful to nature, save its resources, care for the environment.
To solve these problems, public organizations and museum institutions are being set up around the world, and educational activities are being carried out. The World Toilet Organization (WTO) was established in Singapore in 2001 to promote and coordinate sanitation solutions, conduct research, study aesthetics and improve issues. functionality of toilets, setting new standards for toilets in developed and developing countries, exchanging the latest ideas in the field of modern technology, etc.
